SH’s career in meteorology began with a two year contract in Borneo with Montgomery Watson Ltd. to develop Brunei’s hydrological network. The tropical jungle environment tests both equipment and personnel and brought an appreciation of the value of good quality data.

On returning to the UK, SH worked for HR Wallingford on a variety of hydrological and river hydraulics projects. These included numerical modelling of 1-D and 2-D river flows, both domestic and overseas in Bangladesh.

SH’s career then moved toward meteorology and oceanography with his research on interactions between the ocean and atmosphere, which led to a PhD on diurnal variations in sea surface temperature.

Following his PhD, SH worked for PhysE as a metocean advisor and helped to develop in-house software to render tables and charts for Engineering Reference Design reports.

More recently SH has worked at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh, modelling atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases, at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency modelling coastal flooding, and also at PhysE and ABP Mer providing metocean consultancy services – totalling nearly 2 decades of experience working in the metocean and environmental modelling industries.

SH returned to PhysE in May 2025 to work as a metocean advisor and is currently involved in several projects producing metocean statistics for sites in the North Sea and also data QC.
